Step 1

Define the competence, not the curriculum

State the specific task you must perform. Learning paths built from a task are a fraction of the size of ones built from a syllabus.

I need to {specific task} by {date}. Do not give me a syllabus. Instead: what is the minimum set of concepts required to do exactly that task competently, and what can I safely skip for now? Explain what I lose by skipping each.

Build the dependency order

Concepts have prerequisites. Learning them out of order is why the material feels harder than it is.

Arrange those concepts in strict dependency order — nothing appears before what it depends on. For each: why it matters for my task, what it depends on, and how I will know I have got it.
